This is kind of the back story on what Lewis is doing in London, so I hope this is okay. The day had begun as any other. He had been woken up by Richard, the estate's butler, and he had walked alone to the stable. Lewis thought of the stable as a second home. He must have spent more times with the horses than actual people. Saying hello to the different horses as was customary for him, he then began scrubbing down the stalls, starting with Milly's. Milly was a gorgeous British Quarter Horse with rich brown hair and the speed that many of the geldings jealous. Lewis sometimes had dreams of riding her, but he knew that if anyone wouldn't be a jockey, it would be him. He had started on Everett's stall when suddenly Richard came into the stable. Lewis looked up in surprise, not used to other people coming to the stables until he left.
"Madame Bennett would like to speak to you." he said, stiffly. Lewis's expression grew even more surprised than usual. Most of the time he was separated from the actual owners of the estate. However, he wasn't going to argue. Obediently, he followed Richard into the main house, reveling still in the exquisite details of the building. He had been there since he was 14, when his mother started working here as a maid, but he hadn't gotten over the lifestyles of the Bennett`s. All of a sudden, he felt awfully dirty in his overalls and mud-spattered shirt. He checked the ground to see if he was tracking dirt on the carpeting. Richard led him to a parlor where Madame Bennett sat in all her fancy glory. With a motion of her hand, she sent Richard away. She turned to Lewis and gave him a warm smile.
"Come, do sit." she said. Lewis did as he was told. "As you may now, Peter, excuse me, Master Bennett and I have buisness in America to attend to in the following week." she began. Actually, Lewis didn't have any idea what she was talking about. He wasn't up to date on any news about anyone really. He was always with horses and other animals. The lives of other humans seemed irrelevant. Disregarding this fact, he nodded, thinking that this was what Madame Bennett would like to see. He was rewarded with a slight incline of the head before she opened her painted mouth to continue, "Another thing you may have noticed is that we are short on staff here. A friend of mine in London realized this as well, and she kindly offered me the address of an orphanage that has quite a few older children. Interested, Master Bennett and I began exchanging letters with the orphanage heads there, a Mister and Misses Faust I believe. Things had been going quite well, we had picked out a child, and we even sent the money that they had requested. That was a few months ago, I believe? And now, we have lost all contact with them."
Madame Bennett paused and looked at him expectantly for a moment. Lewis let out what he hoped was an interested "oh", though he wasn't sure what he was supposed to say. He wasn't sure what this had to do with him. "You see, Lewis, since Master Bennett and I will be busy with our work in America, we thought that you may be able to travel to London and check on the orphanage. We would send Richard, but we do need someone to take care of our English affairs while we are off, and I don't believe you know how to balance a checkbook." she went on, ending on a rather condescending note. Lewis shifted uncomfortably at the news. "Ah, yes Missus, but what o` bout the horses?" he asked. Most of the time he wouldn't have spoken up about his concern, but the horses were important to him, more than most people really. At his question, Madame Bennett waved her hand dismissively and replied, "Taken care of, Lewis. You can leave them for the few days that you're gone. What we really need to take care of his your appearance."
She then began to babble in that long-winded way of hers about how they would cut his hair, give him some clothing to wear that their son used to have, and scrub him so that he looked presentable. Lewis tried to be as attentive as possible, but his mind was racing. Him? Go to London? Jesus, Mary, and Joseph... this couldn't be well. When he tuned in to listen to Madame Bennett again, she was on a new subject. "We'll provide you with some money, a map, and instructions of where to go. Oh, and tickets for L&M Railway of course. Now I can tell you are a bit uneasy, but think of this as a vacation of sorts. You must be tired of being cooped up in that stable all the time. Besides, if you follow our instructions things should go fine. Following rules is something you are good at." she said. Lewis wanted to tell her that no, he wasn't tired of the stable at all, but he didn't. There was no use. Before he could say okay, he was swept away to get a haircut and a bath. And so, his adventure began...
