comrades in arms, partners in crime.
charlie mcloughlin: His closest friend, even before the Derelicts. Now, he is the one he discusses all his Derelict plans with before announcing them to the group. Charlie is the only one he's able to talk to about James and Lily.
the derelicts: His gang, his group, his squad, his team. Although he puts on the title of commander/leader of the Derelicts, they know that it's only a formality; there can never be any real titles among an anarchical society. They are comrades. They are equals.
►tommy lewis: As a younger member of the Derelicts, Edward tries to take a few moments out of every day to check in and see how he's doing. He attempts to be a mentor to Tommy, although sometimes Edward think that at sixteen years old with a short temper, he shouldn't try to mentor anyone.

ENEMIES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i hate, therefore i am.
johan and hilde faust: Satan's incarnations on earth, as far as Edward is concerned. The root of all the evil he's suffered since coming to this hell hole masquerading as an philanthropic institution for children. He will celebrate the day the world is rid of them forever.
the shadow man: He doesn't dare speak it aloud in case he is heard, but he hates the Shadow Man. Hates him/it because he fears him/it. Fears him/it because he doesn't know what he/it is or what he/it can do. At the time of the revolution they were in a bind, and he/it appeared by magic when they needed his/its power most. Now, though, Edward has a sick, festering feeling deep in the pit of his stomach that they're all in way over their heads with this pact they've made with the devil.
adults in general: He no longer trusts any of them. Now he only sees them as walking meat sacrifices for the Shadow Man.
the aristocrats: Inasmuch as their opposing philosophical ideals. The Aristocrats say they want order. They want rules and regulations. They want control. ...Sound familiar? The orphans had just overthrown the adults who had forced their order and rules onto them. Lily has made a complete face-heel-turn and is trying to set up an adult system exactly like the one they had just gotten rid of, and he doesn't want it.
Edward wants anarchy. There is a misconception among the Aristocrats that anarchy means chaos, but the two aren't mutually exclusive: chaos can be anarchic, but anarchy is not necessarily chaotic. This is because true Anarchism is the belief that rulership should not exist. Everyone agrees to "play nice" of their own free will. There is no chaos. There is self-supporting harmony. No one rules over the others, and in this way, everyone rules. People who give up control to institutions that will force order are just asking for trouble, because those in power will inevitably abuse it. Better to have a loose community governed by a global sense of what is right and wrong where everyone thinks for and relies on themselves.

LOVES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
truly. madly. deeply.
lily montgomery: As much as he tries not to, he finds himself constantly looking at Lily. It doesn't help that she's the leader of the Aristocrats. If it were anyone else, he would have been able to deal with it, but Lily always makes him lose his head. He never words things correctly around her, always ends up sounding harsher and more ruthless than he really is. He loses his temper so much faster with her. Civilized discussions quickly deteriorate into shouting matches that end with both sides stalking off to their respective wings of the orphanage, which only serves to drive them farther apart. And yet, like a compass needle cannot help but point north, he is inescapably drawn to her.
james christopher holmes✝: His younger brother James was the only family he had left after their parents were killed in a political assassination. He thought they would be with each other forever. Then the Fausts happened. Everything he does, he does in the name of the family that was taken from him. In the name of his parents, who seem like characters in a story now, he remembers them so little. They taught him what happens when you subscribe to the illusion of socio-political "order." What really goes on behind the scenes. In the name of his brother, who he loved more than anything else and swore to protect, but failed to. James's death taught him to take action. To take up arms.
